Shopping in Kristiansand

Souvenirs
If you are travelling abroad, it might be cheapest to buy souvenirs at the tax free at the airport or onboard the ferry. The selections are not as good as Husfliden, but cheaper.

Husfliden. Markensgate 31. Entrance Skippergata. www.husfliden.no. Very nice gift shop with traditional Norwegian crafts, hand knitted sweaters etc, but a bit expensive.

Langfeldt garn. Henrik Wergelandsgate 21. Gifts, yarn and sweaters with traditional design.

Budget souvenirs
In second hand stores, you will find all kind of Norwegian souvenirs that doesn’t cost too much, for example books, magazines, cups, cheese slicers, pictures, sweaters….

Lige Godt. Gyldenløvsgate 56. Mostly clothes.

Shalam. Dronningensgate 74. Furniture, kitchen equipment, clothes, books, decorations and more. Maybe the cheapest shop with the best selection.

Natvig Brukthandel. Dronningengsgate 69. Second hand furniture and some other items.

NMS Genbruk. Tollbodgaten 48b. Decorations and finery.

Bladantikvariatet. Tordenskjoldsgate. Magazines, cartoons, books.

Flora. Skippergata 9. Second hand clothes, accessories and shoes. In this store it is also possible to get your own clothes altered.

Flea markets
Between Easter holiday and June there are many flea markets at schools and community houses around the town. Also some flea markets rest of the year. The markets are usually on Saturdays. Look in the newspaper, Fædrelandsvennen. You can read it FREE at the library or at Fædrelandsvennen’s office at Torvet. Just ask somebody to translate for you.

Posebymarkedet. Every Saturday from 19 June to 7 August 11.00 - 16.00 in Holbergstgate. Here you will find a flea market, antiques, handicrafts, food and entertainment.

Free Postcards
At almost every pub and bar there is a stand with FREE advertisement postcards.

Food souvenirs
CB – Beer made by the local brewery Christiansand Bryggeri.

Lefse - Traditional sweet – a thin pancake of rolled dough, served buttered and folded.

Flatbrød - Thin wafer crispbread often eaten with stew.

Sørlandschips - The local potato chips, also the best tasting in Norway.

Kaviar - Buy a tube with caviar (salted cod roe in mayonaise). Eat it on a slice of bread with egg).

Brunost - "a brown "goat’s-milk-cheese", maybe best to ask in a hotel to get a slice or two before buying your own. Very special taste…!!!

Lompe - looks like tortilla, but made of potato. Wrap it around a hot dog and eat or serve with butter and sugar
Melkesjokolade - Norwegian milk chocolate - a piece of Norwegian nature.

IFA - Salt liquorice, loved by all Norwegian, but few others like them.

Fiskeboller - a can with minced fish meat balls. Heat them and serve with potatoes.

Other interesting shops
Thv. Ballestad kiosk. Rådhusgaten 5.
When you enter this store it is like a travel back in time. You will smell and taste the history from 1928 when the store first opened and feel the special atmosphere. They have a great selection of cigars, tobacco, pipes, cigarettes and good expertise on this field.

Thv. Ballestad kiosk had to 31. January give up the fight against the supermarkets. In memory of Thv. Ballestad kiosk we have kept this chapter because we want people to be aware of the sad loss we had in Kristiansand. We hope people will support, enjoy and go shopping in all the small niche shops in Kristiansand.

Outland. Markensgate 24 in the basement. www.outland.no. Role-play cartoons, fantasy/Sci-fiction, horror books, games workshop, alchemy gothic, manga/anime, magic, board games, and DVD. You can also play games FREE, Warhammer at any time and Magic the gathering (card game) Thur and Fri from 16:00

Beads. Skippergata 65. www.beads.as. Make your own jewellery of pearls in all kind of colours, shapes, glasses, seeds, wood, shells and more. Just pick what you want like in a candy store and you pay for the weight. They are also selling Senegalese handicraft.

Brands like Høie (pillows, duvets, woollen rugs, bed linen), Høyang Polaris (casseroles), Ittala (glassware), Boda Nova (glassware), Rørstrand(glassware), Hackman (kitchen equipment), Arabia (ceramics) and Sandnes (knitting wool).

Shopping areas
Markensgate. The main shopping street in Kvadraturen with mostly chain stores, but also walks around to the side streets where you find small special shops.

Sandens. Markensgate 10 / Kirkegata 13. www.sandens.no. The newest shoppingmall in Kristiansand. Sandens offers a wide variety of shops, with everything from clothing to phones. It is a very modern shopping mall, and also has a couple of nice cafés, where you can sit down and relax whilst having a nice cup of coffee or a sandwich.

Dronningensgate and Skippergata. Other main shopping streets with large variety of shops.

Sørlandssenteret. www.sorlandssenteret.no. South Norway’s biggest mall 12 km east of Kvadraturen. Take bus no. M1 Sørlandsparken. Mon – Fri 10 – 20, Sat 10 – 18.

The shops in Kvadraturen are open from 9 – 17, Thur 9 -19, Sat 9 -15, Every 1st Sat in each month 9 – 18.

Sales
Every first Thursday in July there is a big sale in Kvadraturen. Here is big chance to do some bargain. Also in January, there are many sales in the shops. Look for sale sign in the windows.
